A school level project to experience the technology of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to copy and amplify genes or DNA. Learn about the initial discovery of the technique and the many applications used by researchers in academia and the biotechnology industry.

The PCR-workshop is designed to provide hands-on experience of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and its applications. Students will undertake two separate hands-on PCR experiments. Firstly, students will isolate their own genome and amplify a specific gene from the isolated genome. The second experiment will allow students to experience a real life application of PCR. Students will amplify simulated clinical samples and will use a subsequent analysis technique to identify healthy or diseased patients.

The PCR workshop is supplemented with high quality graphics and DVD presentation to expand the students understanding of DNA and the polymerase chain reaction and to encourage students to interact and stimulate discussions.

This two day workshop on PCR offers hands-on and curiosity based laboratory activities to deepen understanding on this widely used technique. The workshop enables the learning of PCR by posing questions, exploring and utilizing the real world, hands-on exploration that stimulates the interest of students and makes the process of learning interesting.
