Description | matrix metallopeptidase 24(MMP24) Homo sapiens This gene encodes a member of the peptidase M10 family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Proteins in this family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes, such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes, such as arthritis and metastasis. The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate the mature protease. Unlike most MMPs, which are secreted, this protease is a member of the membrane-type MMP (MT-MMP) subfamily, contains a transmembrane domain and is expressed at the cell surface. Substrates of this protease include the proteins cadherin 2 and matrix metallopeptidase 2 (also known as 72 kDa type IV collagenase). [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016], |

Protein Function | cofactor:Binds 1 zinc ion per subunit.,cofactor:Calcium.,domain:The conserved cysteine present in the cysteine-switch motif binds the catalytic zinc ion, thus inhibiting the enzyme. The dissociation of the cysteine from the zinc ion upon the activation-peptide release activates the enzyme.,function:Activates progelatinase A. May also be a proteoglycanase involved in degradation of proteoglycans, such as dermatan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans. Cleaves partially fibronectin, but not collagen type I, nor laminin.,PTM:The precursor is cleaved by a furin endopeptidase.,similarity:Belongs to the peptidase M10A family.,similarity:Contains 4 hemopexin-like domains.,subcellular location:Also shed from cell surface as soluble proteinase, by a proteolytic cleavage.,tissue specificity:Predominantly expressed in brain, kidney, pancreas and lung. Overexpressed in a series of brain tumors, including astrocytomas and glioblastomas., |
